Choosing a San Diego neighborhood: seven questions to answer first

Before you fall for a kitchen, make sure you love the commute, the streets and the weekend.

Choosing a San Diego neighborhood: seven questions to answer first

San Diego County is big and its microclimates are real. A ten-mile move can change your commute, your weather and your weekends. Answer these before you start touring.

  1. Where do you need to be on a Tuesday at 8 a.m.? Drive it at rush hour before you make an offer.
  2. Coast or inland? June gloom near the water, warmer and drier summers inland. Both have fans.
  3. Walk or drive? Uptown and the beach towns are walkable; most master-planned suburbs are built around the car.
  4. Which schools, if any, matter to you? Check attendance boundaries for the specific address, not just the city.
  5. HOA or no HOA? Many newer neighborhoods have HOA dues and some have Mello-Roos special taxes. Ask for the total monthly cost.
  6. How much space do you need in five years? Buying for the next stage saves a second move.
  7. What does your weekend look like? Trails, surf, restaurants, or a big yard and a grill.
